Three pieces are the basis of a streetwear outfit: the sweatshirt, the sneakers, and the cap. To get started, focus on these three elements.

The hooded sweatshirt was first produced in the United States (starting in the 1930s). The modern clothing style was first produced by Champion in the 1930s and marketed to laborers working in freezing temperatures in upstate New York.

The hoodie took off in the 1970s, with several factors contributing to its success. Hip-hop culture developed in New York City around this time, and high fashion also contributed during this era, as Norma Kamali and other high-profile designers embraced and glamorized the new clothing.

By the 1990s, the hoodie had evolved into a symbol of isolation, a statement of academic spirit, and several fashion collections. The association with chavs or neds in the UK developed around this time, as their popularity rose with that specific demographic.

Hip-hop culture and high fashion helped a lot for hoodies success evolution.

The good urban outfit way: the sweatshirt with and without hood

The hooded sweatshirt, also called hoodie, is historically tied to streetwear. With or without central zip, emphasize sobriety and plain colors.

Avoid overly impressive silkscreen prints. If you wear a nice T-shirt, do not hesitate to highlight it by keeping your hoodie open. The rest of the time, keep it closed up.

For a round neck sweatshirt without hood, pay attention to finishes. The neck should not be too close to the neck and should fall perfectly on the beginning of your shoulders. Make sure the ribs on the sleeves and bottom of the piece are not too long or too tight.

Test: raise and lower arms several times. Verify that the sweat resumes its original shape and falls down correctly.

Below a round neck sweatshirt without hood, you can wear a shirt buttoned up. In this case, choose models with more worked material (mesh, leather elbows, etc.). Sobriety and plain colors are often the best way to wear a hoodie.
